September Meeting Recap

At the first Garden Club meeting of the season, a fabulous spread was offered by the hospitality committee (have I mentioned that our meetings are free and open to the public?). We followed that with information on the various committees that could use volunteers (lots), and then a fascinating talk from E.J. Neafsey, naturalist and volunteer, about Wolfe Road Prairie. In addition to telling us about controlled burns on the prairie and the ice age era of this region, he also has many photos of beautiful prairie flowers I’ve never seen before, many of which I’d love to incorporate in my garden. A field trip to visit the prairie is planned for late September, date TBD; get in touch if you’re interested in going on that trip.

Next meeting, starting at noon at Cheney Mansion:

October 12, 2016—LURIE GARDEN, INTERPRETATIONS OF NATURE by Scott Stewart, Ph.D., Director of Lurie Garden. The design and management of the garden represent the artful melding of traditional horticultural gardening with sustainable practices. Come journey through the history and daily management of a Chicago public treasure. Learn how the biodiversity of the garden improves life for people, insects and animals in the area, while specific combinations of plantings and practices can be scaled to the home garden. A field trip to the garden is planned for late October.
